From October 12 to 24, fall gets a little more memorable with a ride aboard a historic steam train to SeaLyon Farm for a one-of-a-kind pumpkin-picking experience.
Passengers board the Pumpkin Pickin’ Train at Sheepscot Station before traveling through the forests, farmland and small communities of the Sheepscot Valley to Top of Mountain. From there, a wagon ride takes visitors to SeaLyon Farm, where they can head into the pumpkin patch and choose their own pumpkin to take home.
The farm offers plenty to make a day of it, including locally sourced food, Maine-made beer and cider from Six River Cider, harvest and lavender-themed goods, horse-drawn wagon rides, games and other activities.
After picking the perfect pumpkin, visitors can hop aboard a hayride for the return trip to the railway. The full experience lasts about two to three hours, depending on how long guests spend at the farm and which train they choose for their return.
Pumpkin Pickin’ Trains depart Sheepscot Station hourly from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. Tickets include the historic steam train, hayride to the farm, horse wagon rides and parking at Sheepscot. Pumpkins, food, refreshments and other purchases are sold separately.
Visitors should plan for possible traffic on Route 1 in Wiscasset. Due to the nature of the event, wheelchairs and pets cannot be accommodated.
It’s a festive way to enjoy the Maine countryside, pick out a pumpkin and experience a little fall magic on the narrow gauge railway.
