Maine’s sardine industry took center stage on October 3 as the Penobscot Marine Museum hosted SardineFest, a free day celebrating the history, people and coastal communities connected to one of the state’s most iconic industries.

The festival offered plenty to see, taste and hear, with live music, talks, crafts, games, samples and exhibits highlighting Maine’s working waterfront. Visitors can also explore the Sardine Craft Exhibition Hall and meet champion sardine packer Rita Willey.

Families could enjoy plenty of activities throughout the day, including a new children’s stage featuring sea chanteys, Mr. Ropes, a chance to meet a lobsterman, Bob Lloyd Magic and a visit from Ronda of Carver Memorial Library. A sea life touch tank hosted by Herring Gut Coastal Science Center provided another hands-on experience for young visitors.

The festival also offered opportunities to explore the museum’s exhibits and watch Set Sail demonstrations while learning more about the people and communities that helped shape Maine’s maritime history.
