Maine’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held at 3.2 percent in August, essentially unchanged from July, according to the latest Maine Department of Labor report. The state’s jobless rate has stayed below 4 percent for 56 months in a row.

Nonfarm wage and salary employment changed little from July, with stable employment across every sector. Job totals have hovered near 660,000 for 28 consecutive months, with less than half a percent of variation month to month. Over the past year, gains in health care and social assistance and in retail trade have offset modest losses elsewhere.

On pay, the private-sector workweek averaged 33.5 hours in August, with hourly earnings of $33.77 — up 4.2 percent from a year earlier. The workweek ran longest in construction and manufacturing and shortest in leisure and hospitality, while earnings were highest in professional and business services and lowest in leisure and hospitality.
