The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index slipped 0.8 points in August to 89.4, coming in below the 90.3 economists had forecast.
The index’s two components moved in opposite directions. The Present Situation Index, which tracks how people view current business and job conditions, jumped 6.8 points to 121.2, snapping a three-month losing streak. The Expectations Index, which looks ahead six months, fell 5.8 points to 68.2.
That split suggests consumers feel reasonably good about where things stand right now but are growing more uneasy about where the economy is headed in the near term.
